Background

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused a demand for sterilizing / disinfection boxes to kill bacteria on the items you use, especially our phones. As such I went on research to look around for one and found the Xiaomi Youpin FIVE multifunctional sterilizing box. I decided to purchase it to try it out.

The Stuff

The Xiaomi Youpin FIVE multifunctional sterilizing box came less than 2 weeks after I ordered. It comes in only one color, a grey lid with white bottom. The exterior dimension of the box itself is 189.5mm*105mm*38mm. According to the packaging box, it is said to have the following features:

- Uses UVC-LED to disinfect
- 360-degree disinfection
- 10W wireless charging
- Intelligent human protection
- Disinfect beauty makeup tools
- Disinfect electronic devices

Here are some pictures of the packaging and the box itself:

Usage

I've been using the Xiaomi Youpin FIVE multifunctional sterilizing box for a few weeks now. Most of the time I use it to charge the phone wirelessly (iPhone 11 Pro). Wireless charging takes a while for a phone to be fully charged since it is a 10W charger. According to the Youpin website, Apple phones will only charge at 7.5W. This is not an issue as I use it to charge overnight. The only thing is you need to make sure of is that the phone is well positioned so that it can charge.

For the sterilizing function, first, you will need to put your phone/item in, close the lid and press the button. The LED will light up, meaning that sterilizing is in progress. The LED light will disappear once sterilizing is complete, and you can remove your phone/item. You do not need to turn off the phone to sterilize. Each sterilization takes 15 mins. The sterilization will stop if you open the lid within the 15 min window (This is where the intelligent human protection function kicks in). As for the size inside the sterilizing box, I'm not too sure if an iPhone 11 Pro Max will fit in terms of length, but I was able to fit in a Mi 10 Pro nicely, almost touching the length of the box.

Conclusion

As the sterilization takes place inside the box, we will not know whether it is really working or not. I guess for such items we just have to believe it is working accordingly :) unless we have some test to verify it does kill bacteria after sterilization. The wireless charging function is a nice thing to have, as most of the other brands of boxes I see online do not come with it and it costs more. Some of the other brands are said to have a faster sterilization period (5 mins vs 15 mins).

Overall, I feel that in terms of the demand due to COVID-19, price-performance, and features, the Xiaomi Youpin FIVE multifunctional sterilizing box is worth buying and try it. If you are interested in purchasing one, you can get it from the link below:
